It was the day Jeremy asked his father how the Christmas trees being sold in the parking lot behind Gallagher’s Grocery Store managed to grow there overnight that Mr. Chickering promised himself that from now on his family would cut down their own trees from the forest.

He has the most pleasant memories from his own childhood of the entire family bundling up on those clear crisp wintry mornings.   Since he was the youngest, he rode into the woods on the wooden toboggan pulled by his father.   Between his legs would be a tiny evergreen sapling they would plant to replace the tree that would stand in their home for the holidays.

It was a morning full of joyous anticipation with the whole family chatting away about which tree was their favorite and where it would be placed and how they would decorate it.   Once they finally made their choice, and the tree was lashed to the sled, it always felt like a parade as they made their way back home.

Those are the kinds of memories he wants for his own children.   As they are all inside the house donning scarves and boots and hats, he rummages around his garage and finds the ax from his father.   Next year he needs to buy a toboggan.   But for today, Jeremy will just have to ride on his shoulders holding the new sapling.

Hmmmm . . . perhaps Mr Chickering should find his hat . . . .
