Fergus Peabody has been working for the Cobblestone Circle Rail Lines for as long as anyone can remember. There are a few roads in and out of town ~ and they’re good if what you want is a slow meandering scenic drive ~ but by far the easiset way to come and go in Cobblestone Circle is by rail ~ especially since the new tunnel opened up from Bramberry. So if you want to know what’s new in the village ~ Fergus is your man. He sees all the comings and goings ~ and that’s just the way he likes it.

But lately, Fergus has been dismayed ~ feeling out of the loop, so to speak. He and many others have taken note of mysterious things going on up at the shoreline. His wife, Hazel, said she and their daughter, Amy, had watched a shipment of cement block being unloaded from a boat. A boat! And just yesterday, Horace Willoughby had stopped by on his evening walk to tell Fergus that a fellow had been in the store asking for reclaimed lumber.

"So obvioulsy somebody is building something up there," said Horace. "Probably just that Thistlewhitte fellow finally putting up that art museum he’s been talking about for years," Fergus replied. "Last I heard, Carson Thistlewhitte had been interested in the old lighthouse for the museum, but had run out of funding and put the project on hold," offered Horace. "Maybe he’s come in to some money and decided on a new building instead. Wouldn’t be the first time someone’s been run off from the lighthouse. There’s still plenty of talk about the ghost there," Fergus reminded his old friend.

Later that night, Hazel cast a disapproving eye his way when she caught Fergus using his binoculars from their garage roof. He knows that before long the whole town will be whipsering about these strange events ~ and when they come to him with their questions, he wants to have some new information. And he will ~ there’s a backhoe on the beach now.
