As with most households in Cobblestone Circle, the last months of the year are packed with much anticipation and activity for the holidays in the Chickering home.   And although Abigail Chickering is known for many things ~ her kind nature, the exotic vegetables in her garden, her activity in the community playhouse ~ more often than not, if you hear her name you will undoubtedly hear the word cookies too.   That is because every year for as long as most folks can remember, Mrs. Chickering has taken a full week each December to create her signature goodies.

The tradition began with her grandmother decades ago.   It is no easy task, and truth be told, each January she vows to cut back on the list of people who receive them.   But a soft-hearted soul she is, and wouldn’t you know ~ the list actually grows every year.

Her family is alerted to the start of the marathon when the large mixing bowl that is stored in the attic appears on the kitchen table.   It is then that they know it will be a week of takeout dinners or scrounging on leftovers in the frig, for the kitchen is off limits to regular meal preparation.   After a whole day of mixing up cookie dough and another rolling, cutting and baking, that distinctive aroma that signals Christmas to them fills their house.   It is soon joined by the sweet smell of sugar as Abigail spends the next two days painting and decorating each cookie by hand with brightly colored sugars and frosting.   Little Jeremy has been known to attempt to sneak a bit of the frosting, but the pastry bags still prove to be more of a challenge for him than he anticipates and he is found out.

The packaging of the cookies is nothing short of fabulous.   Abigail believes that a gift should looks as nice on the outside as what’s inside the box, so she spends many hours carefully tying extravagant glittering satin bows on the boxes and tucking beautiful Christmas cards beneath them.

It is truly a labor of love and everyone in the village exclaims that their holidays just wouldn’t be the same without them.

November 2010

Abigail is made of honey colored long pile cashmere mini bear fabric.
Her holiday dress is green cotton trimmed in a scalloped eyelet
that I hand dyed to match the shading of freshly baked sugar cookies.
Her apron ties in the back with a bow and has a tiny green heart.
She is wearing picot trimmed undies.
She will bring a tray with 3 faux gingerbread cookies that are permanently attached.

As many of you already know, more often than not, the stories for my beloved Cobblestone Circle citizens are based on my own experiences.   Abigail’s story if definitely one of those.   Here is a picture of the cookies I have been making for decades ~ the cookies that cause my loving husband and children tp put up with takeout and scrounging in the refrigerator for an entire week every December.   I make hundreds and hundreds of them every year, and yes, the tradition started with my grandmother.

Wishing all of you Happy Holidays!
