Something was very wrong. Rosie Johannsen just peeked into her son’s bedroom as she was passing by with the clean laundry and saw Stevie laying on his bed ~ just laying there ~ without a book in his hands. Something was very wrong indeed.
Stevie was one of those kids with a logical and inquisitive nature who enjoyed learning things ~ all sorts of things. He could usually be found either exploring outdoors, researching on the internet, taking things apart or with his nose in a book. He loved nothing better than figuring out the how and why of the way things worked. “Like father like son,” thought Rosie with a smile.
His latest interest had been flight and he had worked steadily all week building a new kite. When he got home from school today he took his kite to the beach to test it. Rosie thought it was very curious that he was back home in only 10 minutes and went straight to his room. He didn’t even stop in the kitchen for a snack first!
Something strange must have happened at the beach that shook up her son. “Everything ok, Stevie? ” she asked. “Yeah, ” he answered not taking his eyes off the kite. “I’ll be downstairs if you want to talk, ” she said.
Once his mother had gone, Stevie went over to his bookshelf and pulled out a paperback mystery his grandmother had given him on his last birthday ~ The Case of the Haunted Lighthouse. As a rule he didn’t read fiction so the book had sat on his shelf unopened all these months. After studying the cover and briefly skimming the synopsis he raced downstairs to find his mother in the living room reading to his little sister Tess.
“Um, Mom? ” he started hesitantly, “do you believe in ghosts? ” Tess giggled with delight. “Oh, ” she squealed excitedly, “have you met the Captain too! ”
