Kathleen Larkins
No. 44 in the Cobblestone Circle Series

September has come at last and with it an uncommon silence at the Larkins house in Cobblestone Circle.   Gerry and the twins, Holly and Ned, left earlier this morning ~ all carrying new book bags and lunch boxes ~ chattering away with excitement about the first day back to school.   Even the youngest Larkins, 4 year old Brianna is not at home today.   Kathleen’s parents picked her up last night for a mini-vacation at Grandma’s and Grandpa’s.   Kathleen can’t help but smile as she recalls Brianna asking her Grandpa George if they could pleeeeeease go to the fishing hole tomorrow because she wants to introduce him to her dragon friend.   What an imagination that girl has!

Kathleen was not supposed to be alone today.   Usually Mr. Larkins is able to take this day off from work and the two of them get reacquainted after long summer days full of wading pools and sidewalk chalk, fireflies and mud pies.   Don’t get me wrong ~ Kathleen is most definitely one of those mothers who cherishes the carefree days of summer with her children ~ fully aware of how fleeting they are.   But she had been so looking forward to today and was quite disappointed when Paul had to go to work.

Kathleen quickly finished the morning chores of getting the house in order and is now off to water her flower garden.   Overall the border looks good for September ~ well worth tending in order to prolong the blooms before they begin to fade and the yard is transformed into a vibrant carpet of fall leaves.

Mmmmmm ~ the roses smell so good!   But wait ~ what is this?   How did the birds get a piece of paper stuffed into their house?   Oh my~ it’s a note from Paul!

September 2008

Kathleen is made from sassy frosted long pile mini bear fabric that has been hand dyed a beautiful shade of pale yellow.   Her tail is creamy satin cording and she measures barely 3 inches to the top of her head.   Kathleen is wearing her lilac and white gingham apron over a lovely lilac floral print dress that is accented with loads of hand-gathered lace ruffles.   Her white metal watering can is 1 inch tall and has a lovely painted floral detail on the front.   Her garden border was completely assembled and painted by me from teeny tiny wooden pieces and silk flowers.   The colors were carefully chosen to coordinate with Kathleen’s attire ~ and Kathleen herself.

The border is 5 inches long and is 5 inches tall at the peak of the birdhouse.   Every pickett on the fence, shingle on the birdhouse roof and blade of grass was placed just so.  The pink roses were individually attached to the greenery to resemble a climbing rose.   There are two ½ inch lovebirds, a dragonfly and a bumble bee   (can you spy them?)  which are all permanently attached.
