Jeremy Chickering stood in bed on his pillow to get a good view
out his bedroom window. Although there was no moon, the
entire neighborhood was as bright as day with the glow from
the streetlights reflecting from the snow laden clouds overhead.
That hushed calmness you only feel during an evening
snowstorm descended upon the entire village as every tree
branch slowly became outlined in white.
Well, almost the entire village. Little Jeremy was far from
calm. The frustration he had felt over his mother making
him do his homework and getting to bed on time was
gradually being replaced by sheer excitement over what
he knew would definitley, absolutey, positively, just had
to be a snow day off from school tomorrow!
And when he awoke very early the next morning his dreams
had come true. School was indeed canceled!!! Fueled by
the sweet taste of a day of freedom Jeremy hurried through
his chores, fidgeted while his mother encased him in layers of
warm clothes and finally joined his buddies on the sledding hill.
What made it even sweeter was the fact that his older brother
Henry got stuck at home shoveling the driveway! Jeremy
shivered as he remembered how Henry liked to walk behind
him hitting the tree branches over Jeremy’s head making
the snow fall right inside his collar and down his neck.
Older brothers! Who needs ’em!
It was a great day of fun ~ riding down the hill ~ building
snowmen ~ tunneling out snow forts ~ making snow
angels ~ why even their teacher Miss Kittiebittle joined in
the snowball fight! Jeremy made a point of telling her what
a good student he was because he had already finished
every bit of his homework last night.
But all too soon it was time to go home. And as with every
child, Jeremy’s energy quickly turned into exhaustion when the
fun was over. He simply couldn’t be expected to pull
himself and his sled all the way home! Just as the tears were
filling his eyes he heard someone calling his name.
It was Henry! A few minutes later as Jeremy was laying on
his sled being pulled back home by Henry, he decided that
maybe older brothers were a good thing after all
~ well, sometimes . . . . .
