Jasper Porterfield
No. 25 in the Cobblestone Circle Series

Old Jasper ~ that’s what people have been calling him for over 30 years ~ well before he was even close to being old!   But there’s no getting around it now ~ he is old and can feel it in his bones on days like today with the first nip of Autumn in the air.   With all those aches and twinges he wonders how much longer he should stay on as groundskeeper at the Madison Estate.

He feels like family having been around for three generations, and quite soon it could be four.   He’s noticed the way Gregory Brewster lights up when he sees Miss Amelia.   How nice it would be to witness another wedding on this terrace with its grand columns of topiaries.

He remembers planting this one with Miss Jo ~ why Amelia was only a bittie wee infant at the time.   And he chuckles as he remembers how Miss Jo lit up like a firecracker the time he hadn’t trimmed it just so, until that is he had explained that he and her granddaughter had found a bird’s nest there.   Miss Amelia’s got a lot of her grandmother in her ~ a love of the land, a respect for nature, a value for tradition ~ and of course that fiery spirit.

Someday soon that granddaughter who spent many a happy day in her overalls helping Old Jasper may be walking by these trees in her wedding finery.   Too bad Miss Jo won’t be here to see it.

That’s alright ~ he’ll just have to remember for both of them.

Jasper is made of grayish brown long pile cashmere. His tail is thin tan leather cording. He measures just a tad over 3 inches to the top of his head. Jasper is wearing his forest green plaid flannel shirt and his cream colored wool overalls.   He has two back pockets and one on the front bib area of his overalls. The two pale green buttons are purely decorative. Jasper will come to the winning bidder with the topiary which is made from styrofoam balls covered in dried moss.   It sits in a wooden flowerpot that was painted to look like a terra cotta planter. The whole thing measures 5½ inches tall ~ the perfect size for a 1:12 dollhouse display! Jasper’s shears are made from polyclay and are 2 inches long. The basket he uses to gather the clippings is woven straw with wire and wooden handles and measures 2 inches wide by 1 inch tall. Hiding in one of Jasper’s smaller flowerpots is a little bunny rabbit. I think it’s the same one who had been eating the lettuces in Jasper’s garden earlier in the Spring.   He is made of polyclay and is permanently adhered to the pot. It is only 1¼ inches from the bottom of the pot to the tippy top of the bunny’s ears.
