Ginger Iversham
No. 33 in the Cobblestone Circle Series
It had to be one of the quickest seasonal changes ever recorded
in Cobblestone Circle. In only a few days, warm Spring breezes had
dissolved the sparkling fields of snow and ushered in thoughts of
butterflies dancing on the wind, daffodils smiling brightly and birds
readying their nests. Miss Kittiebittle’s thoughts were of how nice it
was to not have to deal with bundling and unbundling all 17 of her
students for recess ~ her challenge today is keeping them out of the
mud at the edges of the school playground. The children
seem happy as well ~ returning to games they hadn’t
been able to play during the Winter months ~ jump
rope and four square and jacks and hopscotch.
But across the street from the schoolyard there is one little girl who
is not happy at all. “It’s just not fair! ” sulks Ginger Iversham as she
kicks the fence in her front yard. “Why does everyone get to go to
school except me! ” And it’s not just the playground fun that Ginger
envies ~ she thinks a lot about what goes on in the classrooms too.
Every night she sits attentively at the kitchen table as her sister
Katie does her homework. She especially likes everything to do with
numbers ~ the counting and adding and she even writes them on
her own paper just the way Katie does. But it’s so hard to wait until
Katie will come home to show Ginger what they learned today.
Ginger clutches her new duckling as she stomps her foot again. “It’s
just not fair! ” she mutters ~ this time referring to the fact that her play
date with Brianna Larkins was canceled because Brianna has got the
sniffles. Ginger had so wanted Brianna to help her pick out a name
for her duckling that Auntie Ruth had sent all the way from
Brambury. “Guess you’ll just have to stay Duckie for
a while longer, ” she says to her new toy.
From the kitchen door Ginger’s mother half chuckles as she watches
all this foot-stomping and not-fair-muttering and decides it is time to
rescue her little Ginger from all this anguish. She finds the bucket of
chalk in the garage and presents it to Ginger ~ suggesting that
perhaps she can draw a picture of Duckie on the front sidewalk.
Ginger considers this for a moment or two and then giggles as she
begins to write giant numbers on the driveway ~ numbers
so large that they can even be seen from the
classroom windows across the street!
