Fletcher Stevens
No. 53 in the Cobblestone Circle Series

Fletcher Stevens was always the last to leave the office at
Cobblestone Circle’s Daily Gazette.   Being assistant editor
of the paper, he felt it was his duty to put the place to
bed each night.   As a younger man, his work
was his life ~ and then he met his precious Irene.
As cliché as it may sound, she helped him see wonder
and magic in places he had never imagined.

Take Winter for example ~ never liked it one bit!   Just always seemed a miserable time to endure until the warmth of Spring returned. But now, through Irene’s eyes, Fletcher has come to appreciate the architectural intricacies of a frosted window pane in the morning sun, the enveloping stillness of a snowy night, the unexpected comical follies waiting around each bend of the ski trail, the childlike joy of snowball fights ~ and after it all, the comfort of having someone to snuggle with in front of the fire with a warm brandy.   Yes, Irene has indeed convinced him of the magic that is Winter.   Tonight the entire village will seem magical ~ it’s the annual holiday lights and display tour and every home will be twinkling.   Irene was putting the final touches on the evergreens in their front yard this afternoon when she called to remind him to pick up a new wreath for the front door from Penny Randall at Precious Petals.

He was enjoying his walk home, wreath
in hand, when it hit him.   At the end of the
street, shining like the sun itself, was the
Shrewsbury home ~ are those chile peppers
hanging from the eaves?   It was then that he
remembered the one specific instruction Irene
gave concerning the wreath ~ it was to have
NO RED!
He winced as he looked at the bright bow on the
wreath.   Could he fix this ~ perhaps change it
before he gets home?   How about making a
new bow from his scarf?   No it’s red too.
What else does he have with him?
How about his handkerchief?
Drat, red as well.

Hmmmmm . . . . . . socks?
