Colleen O’Dooley
No. 51 in the Cobblestone Circle Series

There are a few folks in this world that just find it hard to
admit they aren’t good at a particular task, but Colleen
O’Dooley is one of those who absolutely hates to
admit there is anything she cannot do.   As owner of the
Bed & Breakfast in Cobblestone Circle, Colleen takes great
pride is having her establishment in tip top shape ~ offering
nothing but the best from pristine crisp white bed linens to
her own homemade strawberry jam for the morning biscuits.

This way of thinking (or obsession as Mimsy Shrewsbury
calls it) extends to the way the grand front porch of the house
is decorated for every season and holiday.   But unfortunately
Autumn, when the house is full of guests who have come to
see the magnificent jack-o-lantern display in the village park,
has always been especially troublesome for Colleen.

Why can’t I carve a jack-o-lantern?
It breaks her heart to know that after enjoying the literally hundreds and hundreds of smiling, twinkling pumpkins in the park, ranging from classic smiling faces to frightening devilish grins to abstract artist renditions of Fall scenes, her guests return here to be greeted by the results of her meager endeavors.   Carving pumpkins has proven to not be among her talents.

There was the year she attempted to reattach the pieces of a smile with wooden toothpicks which resulted in a small fire on the front steps.   Then there was the year she grew weary of explaining to people that the scene she carved was a cornfield with a scarecrow.   Even creating the simple classic triangle eyes and wide grin that every school child somehow seemed to master escapes her ~ the eyes never come out the same size!
So many sad memories . . . . .

It is so tempting . . . but I’ll be good.
Surely there is a something she can do!
Hmmm . . . wait a minute . . . with so many pumpkins on display, would they possibly miss one if she were to swap her uncarved pumpkin for one on the display tables?

No, no ~ that would never do ~ but maybe,   just maybe if
she went to the park this afternoon with her pumpkin and
carving knife she could persuade one the artists to give her a
few pointers ~ or better yet, carve it for her!

I better hurry while they’re still there!
