It happens to Beverly every year ~ and this year she’s got it BAD!
We’re talking about Spring Fever of course.
Eventually Cobblestone Circle will see the lush lawns and heavily scented
blossoms usually associated with Spring, however the earliest days of
the season bring only rain and wind and more rain.
But that hasn’t slowed Beverly down much.
She has already packed
away the winter clothes and finished her intense annual house
cleaning ~ she’s even got her windows done ~ inside and out!
It was
quite a sight for the neighbors to see her washing windows while
wearing her husband’s hip waders.
He will never notice that she
borrowed them to avoid getting her own shoes covered in mud.
Above everything else, the thing that is really calling to her heart
is her garden.
Since she and Chester never had any children
of their own, it brings them great joy to share their yard
with the youngsters in the neighborhood ~ so they take
great care to make it child-friendly.
The most popular area is the raspberry hedge.
Many crimson stained
faces have emerged from that part of the yard over the years.
By early summer the pea trellises will see a lot of traffic as tiny
fingers search among the green vines for those elusive sweet crisp
treasures.
A few weeks later those same little fingers will not be able
to resist all the different shapes and colors of cherry tomatoes.
And right before the onset of Fall, the sunflower houses will be
covered in morning glory vines creating secret cottages, forts or
excellent hiding places depending on the games being played that day.
But for today Beverly will have to be satisfied with working on her
garden journal because the beds are still so wet that she dare not
tread in them yet.
Settling herself on the stoop of her potting shed,
she smiles as she pages through the well-loved and weather worn book
where she sketches her plans each year ~ and then adds photographs
as those plans become reality.
Just as she finds her pencil to begin
drawing up plans for this year a big fat raindrop lands right in the
middle of the page!
But before she retreats into the house,
she lightly steps into the yard just far enough to nip
a few daffodils for the kitchen windowsill.
