Amelia Madison
No. 42 in the Cobblestone Circle Series

“NO PANTYHOSE, Martha!”
“They didn’t have pantyhose in Great-grandmother’s day, remember?   And don’t you try to get me to wear those thick stockings of hers either!”

Amelia would like to please Martha, who has been the housekeeper at the Madison Estate since before Amelia was born, but she will not be coerced into wearing any more of the antiquated clothing today.   It is the hottest day of Summer in Cobblestone Circle ~ as it always seems to be for the annual Founder’s Day Picnic.   Miss Amelia is continuing the tradition observed by many of the citizens ~ dressing in their ancestors’ clothes for the celebration.   Well, for the most part.   I mean, she does have a point about the pantyhose.

It so tempting to simply slip into her own breezy seersucker sundress and sandals, but everyone will be expecting her to dress as the lady of the manor today.   This year Amelia has chosen her great-grandmother’s silk gown that everyone says is the dress she was wearing when she first met the dashing Hector Madison.   The story goes that Ivy walked into the cotillion carrying a bouquet of pink roses and they fell in love at first sight ~ though Amelia is a bit skeptical about that last part. Can you really know you love someone the first time you see them?

Amelia picks up the picture of her great-grandparents from her bedside table.   It is strange and yet at the same time comforting to see how much she resembles Ivy Madison.   “Do you think I’m very much like her, Martha?   Do you think I’ll find the love of my life as she did?”   Martha smiles in her knowing way. “Of course you will darlin’ ~ in your own time.”

She cautiously offers the stockings to Amelia once more saying, “I bet the other ladies will be wearing them.” As Amelia’s hands fly in the air Martha backs away.
“No!   No!   No!”
“Besides ~ it will give Tillie Cobb and Colleen O’Dooley something to talk about.”
