Albert Hailey
No. 24 in the Cobblestone Circle Series

Bert Hailey woke up early this morning ~ certainly much earlier than he intended.   His neighbors, the Lounsberrys,   just added a new puppy to their family and that confounded creature mistakenly thinks it is a rooster.

No matter ~ Bert knows once he gets to work his mood will brighten and he’ll feel like a kid in a candy store because . . . well . . . because his store IS a candy store.

There are lots of reasons Bert enjoys his work.   Aside from the sampling (would you look at those hips!) he also gets to wear outlandish candy-man clothes and no one seems to care if his whiskers are trimmed straight or not.   But mostly the fun is dealing with his customers.

Oh sure, there’s the occasional weary husband coming in for a gift to smooth things over with his wife, but more often it is children coming to spend their allowance ~ or women sneaking in to indulge their chocolate addiction.   But the most fun is watching the faces of stressed out adults transform as they find their favorite childhood treat ~ you can almost see their tension being melted away by those simple memories.

Bert Hailey’s Sweet Shoppe ~ the best place in town to change a few odd pennies into a pocketful of happiness.

August 2007

Bert is made of a medium tan pile cashmere. His tail is thin leather cording. He measures almost 3¼ inches to the top of his head. He can’t see a thing without his wire rimmed eyeglasses (which are removeable). Bert does indeed enjoy wearing outlandish candy-man clothes. He is wearing his very colorful striped trousers, green gingham shirt, white ultrasuede vest with a colorful swirled strap on the back, and his yellow bow tie. Both his tie and shirt have teeny tiny green glass bead accents. Bert’s candy cabinet is a piece I purchased as unfinished wood. It measures 5½ inches tall by 4 inches wide ~ the perfect size for a 1:12 dollhouse display! It has been sanded, primed and painted beige ~ and adorned with fabric “beadboard”, green & white striped polyclay moldings, and gold painted accents. A row of pearly beads were added to the tippy top for old world charm. And what good is a candy cabinet without the candy? All the candy has been made from polyclay ~ some of it is in purchased tiny glass jars with decorative screw top caps. Each tiny piece of this candy was hand rolled. The large jar of jaw breakers is 1¾ inches tall. The smaller jars are 1 inch tall. All of the stick candy is just about 1 inch long. The 2 smaller boxes measure 5 ⁄8 by 7 ⁄8 inches. The larger box of lemon jellies measures ¾ by 1¼ inches. The all day suckers range between 1¾ and 2½ inches long. The stand for them is a wooden piece (1 1⁄8 inches tall) decorated to match the candy cabinet.
